If you’re looking for ways to progress your career to the next level, an MBA can help provide you with the experiences, skills and professional network you require.

That was certainly the case for Prakash Chanderia, who was working in the technology sector after studying a master’s degree in computer applications.

Despite having worked in diverse roles for a range of tech companies – including startups, service providers, and product-focused organisations – Prakash realised they needed a more comprehensive understanding of the broader business landscape.

He told us: “While I’ve picked up business insights through experience, they’ve been fragmented, and I sought a structured framework to sharpen my business acumen. I wanted to learn how strategic decisions are made and the reasoning behind them.”

Prakash studied the online MBA – known as the iMBA – at Gies College of Business, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, graduating in 2024. We spoke to Prakash to learn more about his experiences so far and to find out how the iMBA at Gies Business is preparing him to take the next steps professionally.

Why was an online MBA the best fit for you?

I realised an online MBA was the best fit for me after evaluating various factors. A full-time MBA abroad was not practical, as it would have required a significant career break and involved substantial costs, both in tuition and lost earning opportunities.

Given my situation, I needed a programme that allowed me to continue working while pursuing my education.

I wasn’t seeking to change industries; rather, I was focused on gaining insights and skills that I could apply immediately in my current role. The flexibility and practical nature of an online MBA perfectly met these needs, making it the ideal choice for me.

How did you learn about the iMBA at Gies Business?

I was searching for an online MBA programme that combined flexibility with a strong curriculum in key areas like strategy, finance, and marketing, delivered by a reputable faculty.

During my research, I discovered the iMBA at Gies Business and found it to be a perfect match for my goals.

What aspects of the iMBA programme at Gies Business appealed to you?

Several aspects of the iMBA programme at Gies Business stood out to me. First, it’s a full-credit MBA programme, unlike many online or part-time options that compromise on content for learners by either reducing the complexity of the course or covering fewer topics.

Second, the University of Illinois has an outstanding reputation, which was a significant factor in my decision.

Additionally, Gies Business has a long-standing commitment to online education, giving them the experience to refine the programme and address the unique needs of online learners.

Their dedication is evident—they’ve even discontinued their residential MBA programme to focus on enhancing the online experience. These factors, combined with the programme’s robust curriculum, made Gies Business the clear choice for me.

How has the programme aligned with your expectations so far?

The programme has exceeded my expectations in many ways. The live classes are highly engaging, fostering dynamic discussions that keep me intellectually stimulated.

The office hours have been another standout feature, providing opportunities to dive deeper into course material or explore related topics with approachable professors eager to address every question.

What truly impressed me, though, was how immediately applicable the learning has been to my professional and personal life.

For example, the finance course, though challenging, turned out to be one of the most impactful. It enhanced my understanding of finance and equipped me with practical skills that I now regularly apply, such as analysing companies' Form 10-K reports for personal investments.

Initially, I was uncertain about how well the online format would support meaningful networking, but I was pleasantly surprised by the strong connections I’ve built with my peers.

How has the flexible nature of the iMBA programme benefited you?

Balancing full-time work, family commitments, and studies can be challenging, but the flexible nature of the iMBA programme has been incredibly beneficial for me. It has allowed me to adapt my coursework to my personal and professional needs.

For example, during busy holiday seasons or high-pressure work periods, I chose less intensive courses. In quieter times, I took on more demanding courses to challenge myself.

What really stands out is the programme’s accessibility. Each class offers at least two live sessions, so if I miss one, I have another opportunity to participate.

If I miss both, I can easily catch up by watching the recordings and attending office hours for clarification.

This flexibility has helped me maintain balance and continue making steady progress without compromising other important areas of my life.

How will your chosen specialisations be useful in your future career?

I chose two specialisations: Business Analytics and Strategy & Entrepreneurship. The Business Analytics specialisation focused on data analytics, machine learning, and data science, giving me the skills to analyse data effectively and use those insights to drive actionable business decisions.

The Strategy & Entrepreneurship specialisation has also been incredibly valuable. It provided a solid framework for developing effective business strategies, while offering unique insights into the world of startups.

A standout feature was the weekly guest lectures from successful entrepreneurs. Hearing their firsthand experiences of building and scaling businesses was both inspiring and informative, and the Q&A sessions offered valuable networking opportunities.

How would you describe the iMBA experience to prospective applicants?

The iMBA experience was truly transformative. Working on challenging case studies and time-sensitive assignments pushed me beyond my comfort zone, helping me develop the skills and confidence needed to address real-world business challenges.

The programme fostered a strong sense of community, both online and during immersive experiences. Collaborating with diverse peers from around the world broadened my perspectives and led to lasting friendships.

Additionally, participating in events like the CME Trade Challenge and being an ambassador for Gies provided invaluable experience. Overall, the iMBA offered a rigorous yet rewarding learning journey that has significantly enhanced my business and problem-solving skills.
